What Are the Negative and Positive Effects of Emotions on Our Cognitive Abilities?

 

Negative affect creates unpleasant states like sadness or tension, while positive affect brings beneficial states like happiness and optimism. Negative affect narrows thinking but sharpens focus, whereas positive affect broadens thought, fostering creativity and problem-solving. For example, temperature affects cognition, with social exclusion often prompting a desire for warmth. Emotional experiences also affect physical sensations, demonstrating the interplay between the physical and psychological.
